Stuck in the Middle With You

Observed by myglesias on Thu, Jun 26 2008

I'm not sure it was such a great idea to make this stretch of the R Street bike lane run between two car lanes, but that's where they put the bike lane. No excuse for the guy to be driving here either since both the forward traffic lane and the right turn lane adjacent to him were vacant.

I see this every day on my way home. The problem is there's really only enough room (lengthwise) for one full-sized car or two small cars at that light. The rest of the cars stick out into Rhode Island Avenue. So people think they are helping by pulling forward into the bike lane. Big problem for cyclists. Just last week I was a bit further west on this stretch of R Street, following a car with a "BFV - Bike-Friendly Vehicle" bumper sticker on it. Inexplicably, even the BFV found it necessary to drive straight down the middle of the dedicated bike lane despite having no intention of parking or turning right. He/she just kept on driving west on R street, happily occupying the bike lane. wtf?
